03 Jul Caroline Gilby MW with positive reviews of Villa Melnik Wines

We feel honored and happy that two of our wines received excellent reviews by Caroline Gilby MW, one of the most acclaimed British wine writers and experts on Central and Eastern European wine, and author of the book “The Wines of Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova.” If you still haven’t got a copy of the book, order it now. It is an in-depth review of the wine industry in the three countries over the past 30 years. It features profiles of the key wineries and the region and reviews of their top wines. Of course, you can read more about Villa Melnik in the book.

On 25.06.2020, on JancisRobinson.com, Caroline Gilby MW published her most recent report “Bulgarian Wine Today”, which features a review of review of Villa Melik’s Rare Varieties Melnik Jubilee 1300 . The report emphasizes the advancement of Bulgarian wine and the dynamism of the local wine scene over the last five or so years. The author attributes the recent developments partly to the rise of small, independent wineries, and the sense of experimentation and creativity that they bring in.

On Villa Melnik and Rare Varieties Melnik Jubilee 1300, 2016, Caroline Gilby MW wrote:

“Wife, husband and daughter run this small family estate with dramatic views and a strong commitment to rescuing Bulgaria’s rare varieties. Melnik 1300 was created from Shiroka Melnik crossed with Saperavi in 1963 but renamed to celebrate 1300 years of Bulgaria in 1981.
It’s inky dark with lovely fresh damson, bilberry and cherry, with a backbone of well-handled tannins and juicy acidity. (CG)

 Wine Score: 17/20″

Earlier in May, the wine expert tweeted from her Twitter account @Caroline Gilby MW that she was enjoying a glass of nicely mellowing Aplauz Premium Mavrud 2013.
