Melnik wine and Destination Sandanski in the spotlight during Djakovacki vezovi festival in Croatia

Melnik wine and Destination Sandanski in the spotlight during Djakovacki vezovi festival in Croatia

Militza Zikatanova from Villa Melnik participated in a diplomatic mission to twin the municipalities of Sandanski and Djakovo in the Republic of Croatia during the 58th Djakovacki vezovi Festival. The young owner of Villa Melnik acted as an ambassador for Melnik wine, presenting the Sandanski, Melnik, and Struma Valley region as a leading destination for wine tourism. She conducted a wine tasting on behalf of five of the top producers in the Sandanski region and highlighted the indigenous grape varieties.

The Republic of Bulgaria was an official partner of Djakovački vezovi. The festival was opened by the mayor of the city, Mr. Marin Mandarić, along with the Bulgarian ambassador to the Republic of Croatia, Her Excellency Iva Kruleva, and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. Honored guests included the bishop of Djakovo and numerous ministers.

The festival continued throughout most of July, featuring 60 folklore groups with 2400 participants from Croatia, Bulgaria, the United States, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and India. The folklore ensemble ‘Nikola Vaptsarov’ from Sandanski showcased Bulgarian traditional singing and dancing with an almost hour-long concert, broadcast live on national television.

The delegation from the municipality of Sandanski was led by Mayor Atanas Stoyanov and his team. Local businesses were represented by Militza Zikatanova, Nadezhda Tsvetkova – the producer of the series Vina (aka Grapes of Guilt, now out on HBO), Georgi Kanchev from the tourism board Destination Sandanski, Vesela Sharankova, and others. The delegation aimed to promote opportunities for wine, spa, culinary, cultural, historical, and natural tourism in the Sandanski and Melnik region. Special efforts were made to popularize wineries and accommodations among festival visitors, as well as with Djakovo businesses and institutional partners. Visitors to the Bulgarian stand were left impressed by the high-quality wines of Villa Melnik, Aya Estate, Kapatovo Family Estate, Zornitsa Family Estate, Zlaten Rojen, and especially the local varieties.

It was an honor for us that the mayor of Sandanski presented a bottle of Aplauz Melnik 55 to Ivan Churich, deputy archbishop of Djakovo.
