Last autumn, we took a significant step in this direction by implementing partial cover cropping in our vineyards for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>To the untrained eye, grass in a vineyard might look like a sign of neglect, but the reality is quite the opposite. There is a fundamental difference between wild, invasive weeds and the &#8220;beneficial crops&#8221; that we plant intentionally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What exactly are we doing?<\/strong><br \/>\nInstead of leaving the soil &#8220;naked&#8221; or at the mercy of random weeds, our agronomist, Iliya Solunov, developed a specialized seed mix. This blend includes several key components: white clover, rapeseed, flax, and rye. These plants are sown between the vine rows to create a living &#8220;green carpet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is cover cropping vital for the wine and the environment?<\/strong><br \/>\nAccording to Iliya, the benefits of this practice are far-reaching:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Natural Fertilization (Nitrogen Fixation): Plants like clover have the unique ability to pull nitrogen from the atmosphere and &#8220;fix&#8221; it back into the ground. This nourishes the vines naturally, allowing us to phase out synthetic chemical fertilizers.<\/li>\n<li>Erosion Control: The Melnik region is famous for its sandy soils. During heavy rains, the topsoil can easily wash away.
