Bulgarian Association of Independent Winegrowers (BAIW)

Villa Melnik Winery is proud to share that it is an active member of the Bulgarian Association of Independent Winegrowers (BAIW), the official representative for Bulgaria of CEVI (Confédération Européenne des Vignerons Indépendants / European Confederation of Independent Winegrowers). The association brings together family-owned wineries and artisanal producers from across the country to preserve and develop authentic Bulgarian winemaking.
With the same dedication to Bulgarian wine and regional terroir, Militza Zikatanova, second-generation owner of Villa Melnik, holds a key role on the association’s Management Board.

Goals and мission of BAIW

BAIW champions the interests of independent producers for whom viticulture is not merely a business, but a philosophy. The main objectives of the organization include:

• Protecting аrtisanal winemaking: Supporting small and medium-sized family wineries that produce wine exclusively from their own estate vineyards.
• Legislative initiatives: Engaging in active dialogue with state institutions to improve the regulatory framework in the wine sector.
• Representation at the European Level: Representing and defending the interests of independent winegrowers in Bulgaria, including at the European Parliament level.
• Promoting quality and аuthenticity: Establishing indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties on national and international stages, as well as promoting high-quality wines made from international varieties that express distinct terroir character.
• Developing wine tourism: Creating sustainable wine routes and fostering regional hospitality.

Recent Initiatives and Activities

In recent years, BAIW has organized a series of successful campaigns and events:

• Exhibitions and festivals: Participating in specialized trade fairs in Bulgaria and abroad, showcasing the face of independent Bulgarian wineries.
• Educational programs: Hosting masterclasses and tastings focused on Bulgarian terroir and artisanal winemaking techniques.
• Shared marketing platforms: Building a direct connection network between producers, sommelier communities, and fine wine enthusiasts.
• Community building: Fostering a collaborative network and knowledge exchange among association members.
