Wine and stars. Stargazing Perseids 2026 at Villa Melnik

Villa Melnik invites all stargazers, wine lovers, and campers to a mystical summer experience under the open sky! On August 15, 2026, we gather once again on our favorite hill above the vineyards to catch the magic of the annual Perseid meteor shower.
We gather under the open sky to share food, fine Melnik wine, and make wishes to the universe. According to ancient Bulgarian folklore, this tradition is known as “Overnight under the stars” (prenoshtuvane na zvezdi).
Breathtaking 360-degree views of the sea of vineyards in the Struma Valley await you, with a night sky showered with shooting stars right above us! The complete absence of city light pollution makes our hill a perfect astronomical spot. Paired with our golden fish pond and the meteor shower, your most cherished wishes are bound to have a little extra magic!
What to expect from the night under the stars:
- Accommodation: Bring a picnic blanket, a sleeping bag, or even a tent! You can stay for just a few hours around the campfire or camp for the entire night under the open sky. Keep in mind that peak meteor activity occurs after midnight and just before sunrise (between 12:30 AM and 4:30 AM). We recommend arriving after 6:00 PM
- Shared table: Bring food to share—banitsa, sandwiches, homemade cake, or whatever you enjoy. Share with your picnic neighbors and meet new, smiling people! Sharing a communal table is a core part of the custom and brings blessings.
- From Us: Fresh, freshly harvested grapes and whatever other delicious fruits we have in the garden.
- The Wine: Well, that goes without saying—your glasses will not stay empty!
- Admission: Free!
- Pack your bag: Don’t forget a warm jacket, mosquito repellent, comfortable shoes, and a flashlight or headlamp.
When and Where to Join Us?
- All Day on August 15 (10:00 AM – 6:30 PM): The winery doors are open for wine tours and tastings.
- After 6:00 PM: Arrival and pitching tents. This is the most beautiful time of day, as the sun begins to set and paints the hill in golden sunset hues.
The most active phase of the meteor shower occurs after midnight, when the sky flashes with the highest number of shooting stars and bright fireballs. - Location: The meadow above the vineyards of Villa Melnik, Harsovo village.
Stargazing & Starlight Discussions
If you have a telescope or binoculars, bring them along! And if there are any astronomers, astrologers, or astronauts among you, you are more than welcome to share your knowledge and passion. If you are familiar with traditional night-sky customs—such as silent water (mălchana voda), harvesting night medicinal herbs, or leaving new clothes out “under the stars”—we will host an open-air discussion.

What are the Perseids?

What are the Perseids?
The Perseids are one of the richest and most popular meteor showers of the year, visible every summer. They occur when Earth passes through the trail of dust left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. Tiny particles of dust and rock enter the Earth’s atmosphere at immense speeds (around 59 km/s) and burn up, creating bright streaks of light (“shooting stars”).
On August 15, the Perseids will be highly active. Under clear conditions, we expect to see anywhere from 10 to 30 meteors per hour, including exceptionally bright fireballs!
