Why did we choose subsurface drip irrigation?

Traditional irrigation methods often lead to significant water loss due to evaporation. By “hiding” the water underground, we achieve several key environmental sustainability goals:

• Maximum Efficiency: Water is delivered directly to the root system. No waste, no unnecessary evaporation.
• Stimulating Deep Roots: When moisture is below the surface, roots grow deeper into the soil. This makes our vines much more resilient to extreme droughts.
• Natural Weed Control: Since the soil surface remains dry, unwanted weeds find it harder to grow, reducing the need for mechanical tillage.
• Longevity: The installation is protected from sun, wind, and mechanical damage, making it far more durable over time.

The path to implementing modern ecological practices in viticulture is not always smooth. The Melnik land is generous but also extremely demanding. Installing a subsurface system requires serious preparation, heavy machinery, and overcoming the specific challenges of the terrain. For us, these difficulties are part of our mission to create wine that is in harmony with nature.

The Secret is in the Soil and the Melnik Terroir

The Melnik terroir is remarkably diverse – ranging from light stony and sandy soils to rich forest massifs. To know exactly what our vines need, we perform detailed annual soil analyses.
Precision irrigation allows us to deliver not just water, but also nutrients with “surgical accuracy.” This ensures that the “heart” of the vineyard remains healthy and the plants develop optimally, extracting the best from the specific mineral composition of the soil.
