Sun, Music, and Wine: Celebrating Trifon Zarezan 2026 at Villa Melnik

Once again, Villa Melnik became a focal point for thousands of wine enthusiasts as we gathered to celebrate the most significant holiday for vine-growers and winemakers – Trifon Zarezan. Under the bright February sun of the Melnik region, we honored the traditions that bind us to the land and the vine.

The celebration began with a prayer to bless our labor. The winery’s owner, Nikola Zikatanov, performed the centuries-old custom – he blessed the vineyard, pruned the vines, and poured Melnik wine over them to ensure a fertile and generous year. The hostess, Lyubka, welcomed guests with warm traditional bread (pitka), and hundreds of visitors joined the ritual, picking up the shears themselves to wish for health and a bountiful harvest.

The musical program literally shook the hills above the village of Harsovo. For over two hours, folk music filled the air, headlined by our special guest – Maria Chakardakova, who touched everyone’s hearts. Endless horo dances formed around her, with people of all ages joining in the spirit of the holiday.

The atmosphere was further elevated by the impressive Folk Song and Dance Ensemble from Sandanski, featuring over 100 performers. From the youngest children taking their first steps in folklore to seasoned dancers, their energy transformed the winery square into a massive dance floor. The festivities continued almost until sunset with tireless dancing and smiles.

To complete the experience, the senses were treated to the aromas of traditional products at our Farmers’ Market. Guests had the chance to discover authentic produce from local makers:

  • Dairy Products: Panchev Dairy (Mosomishte), Rodopa Milk (Smilyan), and Ivena (Dabnitsa).
  • Meat Delicacies: Eravas & Patessa (Burgas) and Bio Angus Premium (G. Tsalim).
  • Natural Health: Homemade tahini (Petrich) and Roseberry Farm (Osetenovo).
  • Art and Causes: Handmade souvenirs by Art i Deyya, woodcarvings by Ganchev Design, wine gifts and accessories by Sun Valley Experience, and beautiful crafts by the “Petrichki Sledi” Social Enterprise (Petrich).
  • Food: For the hungry wine lovers, the masters from Tikhiyat Kat, Shishi.bg, and Tasty Melnik Grill provided appetizers perfectly suited for our exquisite wine

As always, the winery doors were wide open. During the free tours, we showed our guests the modern journey of the grape and the secrets of our underground tunnels. And the wine itself… it flowed in abundance! At the wine bar and shop, we offered the best of Villa Melnik. The new vintage of Keratsuda was an absolute sensation, and toasts with Sandanski Misket, Melnik 55, Broad-Leaved Melnik, and Melnik 1300 continued throughout the day.

This celebration was part of the Struma Valley Open Door Days initiative, which united the region for an entire weekend. We thank all our colleagues and partners for proving once again that the Melnik region is the most vibrant destination for wine tourism in Bulgaria.

A heartfelt thank you to all of you – our guests. You filled our hearts and inspired us for the new year ahead!

See you soon at Villa Melnik!
